What is a chemical peel?
A chemical peel is a treatment applied to the skin to produce improved appearance of the face. A chemical peel produces controlled injury to the skin which promotes growth of healthier skin with improved appearance.
What kinds of chemicals are used?
Many different chemicals are used for chemical peels which include glycolic acid, lactic acid, trichloroacetic acid (TCA), salicylic acid, “Jessners” solution. The different chemical solutions produce different degrees of controlled injury to the skin. There are two layers of the skin. The outer layer is called the epidermis and the inner layer is called the dermis. Superficial peels (such as those offered at Belleza Med Spa LLC) produce very superficial injury, confined to the epidermis. Superficial peels can help improve conditions such as acne, acne scars and skin discoloration. There is no downtime.
What are chemical peels used for?
Chemical peels can be used as an anti aging skin care treatment to help reduce fine lines, mild skin discoloration from sun, for melasma and to help clear acne.
How are chemical peels performed?
All chemical peels will begin with vigorous cleansing of the skin and often a microdermabrasion treatment to help lift and exfoliate the skin in preparation for a more thorough peel. Depending on the goal of the client, a chemical peel can be more or less aggressive. Superficial peels such as a mild glycolic will have very little recovery time; however, more aggressive peels for the treatment of skin discoloration can result in mild superficial peeling. A customized skin care treatment can be designed for you at Belleza Med Spa LLC.
How long do chemical peels take?
Most peels are performed in less than one hour, depending on size of the area being treated.
What will my skin feel like after a chemical peel?
The state of your skin after a peel depends on the type of peel you receive. The superficial peels may cause some redness, but the skin will feel clean and soft.
How many peels will I need?
Results can be noticed with the first treatment. However, the desired outcome varies from patient to patient. The number of peels will also vary.
How long do the results last?
With good sun protection, results can last months or even years, depending on the depth of the peel. Generally, the deeper peels have a more long lasting effect.
What are the risks of chemical peels?
Superficial peels are quite safe although rarely minor irritation of the skin can occur. The risks are minimal with a superficial peel.
How long after a chemical peel before I can return to normal activities?
Superficial peels require no recovery time (hence the name “lunchtime peel”).
